A playground for monkeys
Two orphaned spider monkeys ended up at the wildlife refuge I was at in Guatemala. How might we give them a space to learn important climbing and social skills?
Prototypes
Being in the rainforest, materials were limited. However, using natural resources led me to a design that was more in harmony with what the monkeys were used to!
Two Modes of Play
Because it is important that these monkeys learn to adapt to a variety of environments, I designed the playground so that it could be placed in two different orientations, thus introducing new ways of playing.
User Testing
It was extremely rewarding to see the monkeys using the playground how I'd imagined, and also in ways I had never anticipated!
